Etymology[edit]

1. Proto-Indo-European *sūdʰlā, which consists of the root sū- and the suffix -dʰlā.
   This becomes the Latin compound sū(ō) (“to sew”) +‎ -bula.
   Cognate to Russian шило (šilo,“awl”) and Czech šídlo (“awl”),
   and to Proto-Germanic *siwjaną (“to sew”).
